Drawing Mangas as a hobby

Kawacy draws everyday though it used to be just a hobby before becoming a full-time profession. He entered an art college, majoring in digital illustration. Kawacy uses Photoshop CS6 and Paint Tool SAI to draw. He has also heard about good drawing/painting programs such as Clip Studio Paint and Corel Painter but no matter how he really wants to try, his computer can’t handle heavy programs anymore.

This is time to have nice conversation about his likes and dislikes!

What kind of artworks do you fancy to draw?
Fan arts. Drawing manga/comic pages is also fun but very tiring.
Can you please explain a little about yourself, and where do you come from?
I’m a Japanese artist who lives in Tokyo. I have studied abroad to learn English. My English was very bad 3-4 years ago.
I’m currently studying in an art college but most of my drawing skills are self-taught.
I am somehow slow in drawing since I procrastinate a lot to play games.
Do you think it’s possible to describe the process of your art style, what are the does and don’t, the important aspects you set yourself to achieve your style of design?
Basically when drawing, I start with the sketch, then base color, base shading, then paint over for the details.
I always remind myself not to be afraid to pick contrast colors because pictures become lively and eye-catching by doing so. But at the same time, I’m making sure the colors won’t hurt the eyes by combining some soft colors like pastel, pink, or pale purple into the drawings.

And I always attempt to make a picture look more 3D or making sure it’s not so flat. Say if I was given only 2 colors to paint, I’ll still do anything to make the picture look 3D with only 2 colors.

For your Designs, do you start manually the sketches or do you start straight with the software? Why this choice?
I start straight with the drawing software on computer to sketch because I’m too lazy to turn on scanner to scan some sketches. Besides, it’s been years since I last drew traditionally, so I think my traditional drawing skill must have come down by a lot.
Also I think sketching using computer is really convenient since I can undo steps or even copy some parts of the drawing so I don’t have to draw the same part again.
What is your current profession?
I’m a freelance illustrator and a college student.
What is your age?
Classified. I’m a young adult so take a guess! :)
What products do you deliver? (Book cover, Magic the Gathering illustrations …)
Currently a web-manga titled Black Blooded and some fan art posters to be sold at anime conventions.
What is your dream for the next five years?
Since I really love drawing manga, so my dream for the next five years would be having at least 20 manga chapters done and published online.

What are your expectations from the design world?
These days many arts are done with 3D modeling programs. I have to admit 3D arts are great and look so real but I still hope that even after many years later in the future full of 3D arts, people will still see the beauty of 2D hand-painted arts.
Do you have any favorite artists, who may influence your art?
I have a long list of favorite artists. But 99% of them don’t have a Deviantart or pixiv account, just twitter.
Some of them are MLin_D, 666pigeon, HICHIworks, Repirich, Zombeing.
But my #1 top favorite is still MJ_shihyun. You’ll see some style similarities with my drawings.
Any books/movies/video games that you fancy and get you inspired?
Books? hmm… I don’t really read.
My hobby is playing games like Silent Hill, FNaF, Cookie Run, FEAR, Bloody Roar, but Pokemon has inspired me the most.

I have watched so many English movies too. And Wreck-It Ralph is a game related movie, so I fancy it the most. I have watched the movie at least 10 times. Oh and all Final Destination movies..oh God I LOVE THEM ALL!
