This time we will pursue our interviews a bit out of the box as the artist Redmer Hoekstra does not use much digital tools to create or modify. He tends to keep its use only to a minimum.
Nevertheless his creations are so original that we have decided that his art was definitely worth a post.

Are you using Photoshop, if yes which version? Any other illustration tool please let me know.

[Redmer Hoekstra]
I rarely use photoshop and only to slightly tweak levels and contrast of the scanned drawing. and to alter dpi for the web etc.

[YourCavern Blog]
What kind of artworks do you fancy to draw?

[Redmer Hoekstra]
My works are surreal pendrawings.

Explain a little about yourself, and where do you come from?

[Redmer Hoekstra]
I’ve graduated from the art Academy in Zwolle, the Netherlands, as an illustrator.

[YourCavern Blog]
Do you think it’s possible to describe the process of your art style, what are the does and don’t, the important aspects you set yourself to achieve your style of design?

[Redmer Hoekstra]
How my art comes to be: first of all I have an idea, this can be in the train, on my bike or just sitting, staring. sometimes half asleep but mostly just during the day. the idea is then sketched with a pencil on paper to see what composition the general image will be. and when I am happy with what I see, I finish the drawing with a fineliner pen.
Does: Do- relax, get inspired by great artwork online or in books, take a walk in nature, ride a bike, feel the wind,
Donts: spend all day behind a computer, stress, think about wanting to make something that will sell really well. Play computer games.
The important aspects I set myself for my art: It has to be original, if it already exist I don’t want to make the idea anymore. I want to surprise myself and if possible, make myself laugh.

For your Designs, do you start manually the sketches or do you start straight with the software?

[Redmer Hoekstra]
Only manually. it gives more of a personal signature to the artwork i think. more real maybe?

Well we’ve hesitated long to publish this post as Redmer uses to a minimum (so far) digital tools. Nevertheless this is always good to exit the matrix and see what talented people can do.
This is in a way where we can see actual limits of using only digital tools.
