Andy Fairhurst enjoys the scenery of Northern Wales while he is drawing new illustrations. The beautiful coast of Wales probably inspires him greatly.
In this interview of Andy, we will (among many other interesting stuff) in particular pay attention to his funny series of drawings “Superhero Kids”.

Are you using Photoshop, if yes which version? Any other illustration tool please let me know.

[Andy Fairhurst]
I have used Photoshop almost exclusively over the past decade. I am currently on CS6. I’ve dabbled with ZBrush which I enjoyed but never get the time to use. I have also used Illustrator and I suck at that…which is irritating as I love vector art.

[YourCavern Blog]
Are you a professional artist?

[Andy Fairhurst]
Well I try to make a living at it freelance so I guess I am. I don’t know how professional though as I aint making my fortune just yet.

[YourCavern Blog]
Where are you based/nationality?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I am Based in beautiful North Wales on the coast. The scenery is gorgeous around here. I hail from England though and grew up in the Midlands. I have lived all over England and Wales to be honest so I have no real roots.

[YourCavern Blog]
What kind of artworks do you fancy to draw?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I like to do fairly detailed fantasy/scifi. I also like doing fan art when I get a mental block. In fact I seem to be doing that more and more lately as I have a new passion for creating movie posters. I Joined the Poster Posse and we’ve done some poster projects which I find to be really fun and the other artists an ace. I’m also doing a series at the moment of movies from my formative years all viewed from a bird’s eye perspective.

Explain a little about yourself, and where do you come from

[Andy Fairhurst]
Well I am a married father of 3 young kids and I live and work in North Wales.

[YourCavern Blog]
Do you think it’s possible to describe the process of your art style.

[Andy Fairhurst]
I’m not sure what style I have and my process isn’t as regimented as some. Sometimes I have a hundred layers of pure mess going on for days before something actually looks half decent.

[YourCavern Blog]
What are the does and don’t, the important aspects you set yourself to achieve your style of design?

[Andy Fairhurst]
To be influenced by other artists that you admire. Do take aspects of other artists work that you think might compliment or improve your own style. Don’t be disheartened by better artists then yourself, use that feeling of art envy to better yourself and not to give up. Don’t copy other artists. Be inspired by or pay homage to but don’t just copy it. If I do fan art, I do my interpretation, something that nobody else will have seen, even if it is a character or film they know well. I never just out right copy something that exists…I don’t see the point in that.

[YourCavern Blog]
For your Designs, do you start manually the sketches or do you start straight with the software?

[Andy Fairhurst]
Before I went digital I used to pencil draw and when I discovered digital painting I used to sketch my work and scan it in to colour. Now I never use pencil and paper other than to quickly scribble down thumbnail images that may have popped into my mind. I start from scratch in Photoshop with my trusty pen and tablet.

[YourCavern Blog]
Why this choice?

[Andy Fairhurst]
It’s just quicker in the end and I’m more at ease with the tablet and pen than I was all those years ago.

What is your age?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I’m now ancient compared to these young rock star digital artists. Put it this way I saw Back To The Future at the cinema.

[YourCavern Blog]
What products do you deliver?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I do a lot of private commissions. I have also been working on some BBC licensed art prints for Big Chief Studios. I am doing a few series for their Doctor Who range…Women of Who and Monsters Of Who and there may be something else BBC related in the pipeline!

[YourCavern Blog]
What is your dream for the next five years?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I’m at the age now where I just hope life stays nice and my family is provided for. I don’t have the dreams I had a 20-year-old so I am happy with my lot at the moment. If any opportunities come along…bonus :)

[YourCavern Blog]
What are your expectations from the design world?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I find it is evolving fast and the art community is getting bigger and more diverse so I guess there is more competition. The standard is getting better all the time.

[YourCavern Blog]
Do you have any favourite artists, who may influence your art?

[Andy Fairhurst]
That actually changes all the time. So if I name some people now it will be someone else in a few weeks. But there are LOADS of artists out there I think are awesome both young and old.

[YourCavern Blog]
Any books/movies/video games that you fancy and get you inspired?

[Andy Fairhurst]
I get inspired by more or less the same thing as other artists, books, films, music. I can’t name one thing in any one genre specifically but the last thing that inspired me to do anything was watching Jaws again for the millionth time and me thinking…hmm I think I will do a Jaws poster. So I did :)

The passion for the details in his illustrations of Andy Fairhurst are definitely worth a look, many artists don’t go so deep into detailing artworks. Some of his work can be purchased @ blurppy.com
